There are Hogs fans, and then there are Hogs fans.
IYKYK
Ok, let me explain.
The hogs stink. They’ve stunk for years. We’ve had good players, good recruiting teams, coaches, and athletic directors, but for some reason, it just doesn’t seem to come together at the same time.
So, a majority of the “fans” are there for the atmosphere, the food, the tailgating, the cute red and white clothes, calling the hogs, and the excitement of the crowd.
And then there are Hogs fans through and through. Loss after loss, they still cheer on their Razorbacks. They know the fight song, the team’s stats don’t phase them, and deep down, they believe this is our year – every year.
Fans like Canaan Sandy.
The one and only. He loves the Hogs. Like, LOVES them. If you’ve been to a Razorback game, you’ve probably seen him decked out, head to toe, in Razorback red. No one could be more proud of the Hogs than Canaan Sandy. He is a true fan. He wholeheartedly believes in this team, win or lose.
He puts us bandwagoners to shame.
John 2:23 – 25
“Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.”
These men believed in Jesus, so why does it say Jesus didn’t commit Himself to them?
Let’s look at two things here. First, why did they believe? Because of the miracles. You might be thinking, I thought you said the purpose of the miracles was to prove who Jesus was. True. But, these people believed the miracles but not that Jesus was God. Many today think Jesus was a good man and teacher sent by God, but not God Himself. And as John Piper puts it, “Some belief is not saving belief.”
The second thing we look at is the last part of verse 25. “He knew what was in man.” Jesus is God. He is all-knowing. He knows the depths of man’s heart and mind. Nothing is hidden from Him.
He knows the difference between a fair-weather fan and a true fan.
A fan like Canaan Sandy.
The Bible tells us to examine ourselves to see if we truly have faith in God. So, stop and ask yourself, what is it that I believe about Jesus, and do I truly love Him?
Do I still believe and trust Him when there is loss? When it feels like it’s been a losing season, will I still trust Him? Am I committed to Him, His game plan, and Him leading me? Do we have a relationship together where He knows me by name?
Am I a true fan?
If so, shine your light for others to see the One you love!
