Three Ways God Speaks That You Might Be Missing
387 Views

Have you ever heard someone say they were just doing what God told them to do? Maybe you have wanted God to just tell YOU what to do. I know I have been in that position many times. I have thought to myself, “If God would just tell me exactly what He wants, I will just do it.”

God probably won’t spell out answers to you (or me) with words made of clouds. He won’t likely send you a letter in the mail. BUT…God does speak to us. Three ways Psalm 19 tells us He speaks to us are through the skies, the Scripture, and His Son.

Verses 1 and 2 tell us, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.”

The skies speak of God’s glory, faithfulness, and sovereignty. Every sunrise, sunset, roll of thunder, rainbow, puffy cloud—they declare His glory.

Verse 3 tells us that, “There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.”

So…the skies declare His glory, but there are no words. That might sound confusing. In a minute way, this makes me think of how a mother can communicate a lot without words. Maybe her face can display pride, making words superfluous in making sure her child knows he or she did something well. I have been the recipient of many mama faces that communicated that I should stop what I was doing without any words needing to be spoken. The “mama face” can be very powerful.

Any time I am able to enjoy the outdoors, God’s glory speaks boldly. God’s power is spoken non-verbally, but with great volume. Creation alone speaks of God as Creator and Sustainer. We feel the warmth of the sun, see the light that gives life, and we receive His undeniable message.

Creation affirms that God is real. His sovereignty is undeniable, as we see how all the intricate details of life work together by His design. So, God does have a message for us in creation.

Psalm 8:3-4 says, “When I look up to the heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man, that You care for Him?”

God also speaks to us through Scripture. Psalm 19:7-11 further describes God’s Word (His instruction, testimony, precepts, commands, ordinances) as perfect, trustworthy, right, radiant, altogether righteous, pure, and enduring forever. It tells us that it can renew one’s life, make the inexperienced wise and the heart glad, and it makes the eyes light up. Man! That sounds pretty amazing. This passage continues to describe God’s Word as more desirable than gold and sweeter than fresh honey from a honeycomb. It warns those who take it to heart and offers an abundant reward to those who keep it.

So, God might not write out directions for me in the sky, but He speaks to me of His unwavering faithfulness as He orchestrates creation perfectly. Scripture gives me instructions, testimony, precepts, commands, and ordinances.

It also is a great treasure and an important warning—but only if we take His Word to heart and look to Him, who is the Word, and live it out as we walk with Him.

I have full and unfettered access to the throne of God because of the sacrifice Jesus made. I can pour my heart out to Him. How amazing is that?! I don’t have to “wing it” and just try to make the right choices in life. God desires my heart. He wants me to not only know what to do, but know Him. He tells me in James 1:5 that when I lack wisdom, I can ask Him for it, and He will give it to me in abundance without reproach.

He also desires we pursue relationships with other believers who will point us to Him and encourage our spiritual growth.

Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” And the encouragement to lean into relationships with other believers is stated again in Hebrews 10:24-25, “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

So, no, I do not expect God to skywrite, “Make THIS decision.” He will speak to me, though, as I look at creation, reminding me of His sovereignty and faithfulness as Creator, instilling in my heart that He created me with purpose, and reassuring me that He is in control and has a plan. He will give me wisdom, instruction, and guidance as I look to Scripture regularly. As I get to know Him, through His Word, prayer, and being with other believers, He will help me find answers to the questions I face.

It might seem like skywriting would be so much faster and easier, but I would miss out on really getting to know Him—and that is worth more than all the gold in the world!
