They Need to Know
308 Views

“The world has a right to know”.

This is a widely used phrase, especially in the news business. I remember sitting in a story meeting. This is when we generated ideas and pitched stories we felt were worth covering. This particular morning, a police report had come to our attention about a prominent business man and bank owner that was accused of misuse of funds.

Several argued that we really didn’t need to cover the story because of his connections with the tv station and the community.

As I sat there listening, I thought, “don’t we always say the world has a right to know?” We report the news. It’s up to the public to determine what they think about that situation. Reporting the facts doesn’t mean we are for or against anyone. It’s just simply reporting the facts.

How can we not tell the story?

Acts 4:13-20

“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.
15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.
17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!
20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

Peter and John were boldly declaring the truth about Jesus to the people. The crowd had just witnessed a miracle – a man in his 40’s that had been crippled from birth had just been healed! He was running and jumping and everyone could see it. All were amazed and wanted to know how this could happen. So, Peter and John told them.

It’s Jesus.

Through His power this man has been healed.

But the religious leaders were furious. They wanted this to stop immediately. They threatened Peter and John to stop speaking or teaching in the name of Jesus.

Their response was spot on.

“We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard”.

The world has a right to know! The need to know about this miracle, they need to know about Jesus!

Our response should be the same. We have an incredible story to tell. People need to know…

about the incredible miracle of salvation

about Jesus and His love

about His sacrifice for the world

about His forgiveness

about His authority and power.

They need to know the truth!

The world will share stories every day of man’s accomplishments, and in the same breath about man’s depravity and brutality. It celebrates sin and puts it on display. It tries to convince the public that truth is relative, our nature and self rule and applauds the corrupt.

The world needs to know.

Will you tell them? If God has saved you, your response should be the same as Peter and John

“We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

How can we not tell them?

People are dying and going to hell every day because we’re not bold enough to share Jesus with them.

They need to know.

Tell them the story of Jesus.
