There Is A Light

Click, click.

With two turns of the knob, the lamp comes on. Immediately, a warm glow fills the space.

I squint my eyes as they try to adjust, throw back the covers and reach for my house-shoes.

I look out the window and see bright gold, red and orange clouds streak across the horizon as the sun begins to rise.

Light.

It’s amazing.

It’s beautiful, inviting, warming, illuminating.

What you couldn’t see in the dark, the light reveals.

That’s another interesting thing about light – darkness cannot exist in its presence.

As light enters, darkness disappears.

Luke 4:35-37

“And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.”

Luke 4:35-37

Jesus came to a synagogue to teach and there, He encountered a man who was processed by a demon. Jesus, the Son of God, spoke and the demon was gone. In fact, the devil not only left this man, but the man wasn’t hurt in the process.

The people watched in amazement. They had never seen anything like this. They surely had encountered men and women who had been possessed before, but even the priests and the chief Pharisees couldn’t force the demons out.

This man had authority.

This man had great power.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:5 (NIV)

Jesus. The light of the world.

In Him was no darkness, it couldn’t even be in His presence because He is light.

Jesus’ light does several things in our lives:

  1. It reveals what was once hidden.
  2. It guides our steps so that we can better see the way to follow.
  3. It brings warmth into our lives.
  4. It acts as a beacon, calling us towards Him.
  5. It allows us to better see dangers as they approach.

When we have the light of Jesus, we no longer can live in darkness. The old, sinful way of life, is cast off as a mere shadow in the light of His glory.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”

1 Peter 2:9

You no longer have to fumble your way through the dark, searching, full of fear of what might be hiding and waiting to destroy you. There is a light, and His name is Jesus. Let His light shine in your life and fill you.

Today, pray for just that. Pray that God would shine into your life and take away the darkness. Ask Him to light your path so that you may follow Him!
