Hunkered down on my knees in the school bathroom, my hands on the back of my head as I hugged close to my knees. This offered little protection for the storm that was brewing outside.
The power flickered on and off, and eventually, it never came back on. Whispers and cries flooded the hallway from other kids while teachers tried to calm and soothe the fears.
I was in the first grade. The idea that a tornado was near was surreal, honestly. The thing that made me most nervous was that I was in the boys’ bathroom and girls weren’t supposed to be in there.
I could hear the wind picking up, but you couldn’t see much through the beveled glass of the window. A few shadows now and then, but nothing else.
The floor was cold and hard against my legs, but our teachers kept reminding us to stay where we were.
And just like that, it was over.
While I didn’t see the tornado with my own eyes, I knew it had come through our little school. The evidence was there. Trees were down and a part of the chain link fence was destroyed. Thankfully, it had missed the buildings.
“And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.” (Matthew 27:51-53)
The death of Jesus on the cross could not be denied. He was hung high upon the wooden beams on a hill for all to see. There was no mistaking who He was, they had insisted on writing King of the Jews above His head that bore the crown of thorns. Every eye was on Jesus. Some were crying tears of anguish and pain as they watched their friend, their son, their brother, die on that hill. Others cheered and mocked Him as they spewed venomous curses out of their wretched mouths. Eyes filled with pride as the Pharisees beheld their victory over the man who claimed to be God in the flesh.
Darkness covered the earth.
The veil was torn.
An earthquake rattled the earth, splitting the rocks.
Graves opened up, and bodies of the dead arose.
When Jesus died, there was no mistaking that something remarkable had happened. The evidence was there. No matter who you were, or what you believed, in that moment, you knew something major had just occurred.
Soon, Jesus will return. And at this appearance, there will be no mistaking who He is. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will return in all His glory! And at that moment, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that He is Lord.
Just like the Roman soldiers did.
“Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” (Matthew 27:54)
For some, it will be too late. Their chance to recognize who Jesus is will be gone. They will only now be under His authority and wrath.
There is no mistaking who Jesus Christ is. The evidence is there. Just look at my life if you need proof. I’m only one example of many of a life changed by the blood of Jesus.
Open your eyes to the truth and choose to follow Jesus today!
