When we were kids, there was a time when my brother was scared of blood. Even if he saw ketchup and thought it was blood, he would scream.
Blood represents pain and death. It makes so many of us squeamish.
I remember thinking about that when it came to verses in the Bible or songs about blood.
“There’s power in the blood” or “nothing but the blood of Jesus.” As we sang those songs, I remember thinking, I kind of don’t like even thinking about blood.
Because to me, blood represented pain and death.
I want to think on the good things, not the painful ones.
But it was through pain that forgiveness and redemption were made possible.
Ephesians 1:7
“He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.”
Christ poured out His blood for us.
That statement tells us that Jesus died for us, that He gave everything for us and became our sacrifice. But to understand why such a sacrifice was necessary, we have to go all the way back to the Old Testament.
When sin entered the world after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. That covering wouldn’t last. It was only temporary. God took an innocent lamb, sacrificed its life for Adam and Eve, and made a covering for them. The blood of the innocent had to be shed for the guilty.
And this is what Christ did for us—once and for all.
John recognized Him as the Savior, the sacrifice we needed.
John 1:29
“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”
That Lamb would give His life to cover our sins.
Hebrews 9:12
“He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.”
So, what shall we do?
We believe Him and accept His sacrifice. Then, we live our lives for Him.
1 Peter 2:24
“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”
The song says,
“Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood.
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.
There is power, power, wonder-working power
in the blood of the Lamb;
there is power, power, wonder-working power
in the precious blood of the Lamb.”
Yes, blood represents pain and death, but it also represents life. Jesus gave His so that you might have eternal life in Him.
