There are very few times I can remember really getting into trouble when I was younger. One reason being that I would see my sister get whooped and I didn’t want that. Second reason was that sometimes I just didn’t get caught. I was a little sneakier and quieter than my sister.
But I do remember asking to go to a friend’s house and my mom said no. At the time, it seemed so unfair. However, there was a reason she was saying no. I had disobeyed her and had attitude to go with it. So, when I thought things had calmed down a bit, I decided to ask again, thinking that maybe she would have changed her mind. Maybe she could see that all the other girls were getting to go over there and how awful it would be if I didn’t get to go. She would see all that I would miss out on. She would realize how devastating it would be if I couldn’t be there.
So, I asked.
“I said no. Don’t ask me again.”
Well, there it was. I’m sure I sulked, retreating to my room and cried. But her word stood strong.
Moses, the leader of the Israelites, stands before them at the banks of the Jordan River. The land of Canaan lies ahead in the distance and the people can see what God has promised to them. Moses reminds the people of what they’ve been through, how God has provided all they have needed and how He is the one who fought their battles. And then Moses prays to the Lord, with one last plea.
“O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might? I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon. But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.” (Deuteronomy 3:24-26)
“I said no.”
His word stood strong. He had already told Moses he would not be allowed to enter the promised land because of his disobedience. Now, as Moses asked again, he said no. And he put an end to the discussion.
Has the Lord told you no and you keep asking time and time again? Is there not a reason He is saying no?
Some things He wants us to wait for, but some are definite “no”s. If you are facing this issue, be reminded that there is a reason He has told you no. Whether it’s because you disobeyed Him or because it’s not good for you, He knows what’s best.
“And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.” (Deuteronomy 1:31)
God cares for you just as a father cares for his child.
I watched my brother last night with my nephew and the love they have for one another is incredible. If he has to discipline him, it’s because it’s for his own good. Our Heavenly Father corrects us and protects us, even from ourselves.
Trust in His plan today. If He said no once, there’s a reason. Trust Him.
