There it was.
They had been searching for so long. They had hoped to find the treasure, but seeing it right there in front of them was more than they could have dreamed.
They had pulled it from the depths of the ocean. The handles and lock were rusty and nearly falling apart. The outside of the chest had pieces that were crumbling, but that’s not what they were here for.
What person searches for treasure and considers the chest the prize?
The true treasure is what’s inside the box, not the box itself.
1 Corinthians 4:7
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”
We are just a vessel, a chest. The true treasure is Christ within us. That was Paul’s message to the Corinthian church, and it’s a message that rings true even today.
It’s easy to become prideful, isn’t it? Maybe it’s a post you shared that everyone really liked and commented on. Or maybe it’s that blog you wrote, a picture, the congratulations for a job well done, or the invitation to share your story—you know, the one that can end up becoming more centered around “I” than Christ.
Paul’s picture of the treasure in a vessel is a great example to us. As believers in Christ, we are simply the chest that holds the greatest treasure there is. This chest will wither, fade, and crumble, but not the treasure within. It will last for eternity.
