The Day of Salvation Is Today—Not Tomorrow

Smoke billowed into the air. A red and orange glow could be seen through the upstairs window.

The house was on fire!

A neighbor saw the smoke, called for help, and ran over to the house. She began screaming her neighbor’s name. In a few moments, he opened the door.

“Oh, hi Sarah! Good to see you! What can I do for you?”

She was in shock. What on earth was he talking about? Why wasn’t he running for safety?

“Gary! Your house is on fire! You’ve got to get out of there!”

“Oh, no, that’s just a little smoke. I’m fine. Thanks for stopping by.”

With that, he closed the door.

Frantic, she called 911 again, explaining that her neighbor was inside the burning house and wouldn’t listen to her.

“He must be delusional from smoke inhalation. He won’t come out!”

Sirens rang out as the firetrucks sped to the house. The entire second floor was ablaze, and smoke poured out of the windows.

She tried to yell for Gary again, but the sirens were so loud. There was too much noise drowning out her pleas for him to escape.

She picked up her phone and dialed his number.

“Hello?”

“Gary! Your house is on fire! I can see it. The fire trucks are here. You have to get out! Now!”

“Sarah, what are you going on about? I’ve got a roast in the oven and Debbie will be home soon. I can’t really talk right now.”

“Wait! You don’t understand. Listen to me! Come outside! I have something for you! Please. Just come out right now, Gary. Drop everything.”

“Maybe tomorrow, Sarah. I’ve got way too much going on.”

Click.

The phone went silent.

She heard the commotion continuing outside. She was desperate to try to reach him. How could she get through to him? What could she say to get him to understand he was going to die if he didn’t listen?

She ran outside and saw the fire chief speaking to two firemen.

“Sir! My neighbor! He’s in that house! His name is Gary, and he won’t listen to me! I’ve been trying to tell him his house is on fire, but he just won’t listen! I think his mind is clouded or something. Help him!”

The chief grabbed his radio and formed a crew to break through the door. As they pushed through, smoke and flames shot out. There was no way for them to get in.

Sarah screamed in terror. Why wouldn’t he just listen? How could he not see what was happening? She tried to warn him. She tried to rescue him. But he wouldn’t even hear her. And now… it was too late.

2 Corinthians 6:1-2
“As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it. For God says, ‘At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.’ Indeed, the ‘right time’ is now. Today is the day of salvation.”

Paul urged the people of Corinth to listen to truth. Many were preaching and teaching false doctrine and encouraging idol worship. They needed the truth. They needed to understand they were in danger. They needed to listen and be saved.

Don’t put it off! Today is the day! Be saved! That was Paul’s urgent cry to them. And it’s my urgent cry to you today.

We’re all in that burning house. And we will be consumed by the flames if we don’t listen to the truth.

Jesus alone is our hope.

Because of sin, there is a giant canyon between us and God. Left where we are, we will face suffering and death. There is no way for us to cross over to God in our own efforts. We can’t jump—it’s far too wide. There’s not enough building material to get us from here to there. There is simply no way.

But here is the good news. Jesus, the perfect and sinless Son of God, was willing to be the bridge we needed to go from death to life. It cost Jesus everything. He gave His life on the cross so that we could be reconciled to God.

Jesus redeemed us by giving His life.

And now, He offers it to you.

Today.

What if tomorrow doesn’t come? What if an accident happens on the way to work or on the way home? What if you have a heart attack or some other medical issue? There are no second chances when it comes to death. It is final.

Jesus is offering you salvation today. A choice has to be made. What we choose to do with the salvation Jesus offers us now will determine our tomorrow.

Today is the day of salvation.

Answer the call. Hear His voice and cry out to Him. Surrender it all to Him. Trust Jesus to forgive you of your sins and trust that when He went to the cross, all of your sins were paid for there. Accept His gift of love. Receive Him today as your Savior and Lord of your life.

The time is right now.
