I finally sat down, inhaled a deep breath, and kicked off my shoes. Not only had it been a long day, but it had been a long week. I felt like my body had been going non-stop. My feet hurt, my lower back was tight, my calves ached, my shoulders were sore, and my head was killing me. But there was so much to do!
Have you experienced times like this? Your life feels like you are in the fast lane, zooming by everyone, making sure this is done and that is complete, marking off tasks on your list. Some days you even feel like you’ll never get finished. What is before you looks and feels overwhelming! But day in and day out you work to get it all finished.
And then, that beautiful moment of rest comes. I almost don’t know what to do with myself when it happens. I feel like there’s something I’m forgetting to do. I feel guilty for resting, knowing that I could be using that time for something in a list somewhere.
In the hustle and bustle of busy schedules, we need to take time to slow down and rest in the Lord.
“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.” (Mark 1:35-37)
I love the book of Mark! It is filled with ACTION! This book cuts straight to the chase, telling of the things Jesus did. But even in all of the happenings of His ministry and the flurry of activities going on, Mark shares with us this important piece of scripture.
Jesus took time to rest in God. He separated Himself and spent time in prayer. The disciples pretty much said, “What are you doing? Where have you been? Everyone is looking for you! You are needed!”
But out of everything that commanded His attention, Jesus had been doing the best thing.
Are we?
The list is long, they are calling out to us to be done, but what is the best thing?
Have we taken time out to spend with the Lord? Not just for us to tell Him what we need, but for Him to speak to us.
In our busy, task-filled days, with overwhelming projects and situations, start with the best thing…
Start your day with Jesus.
