Remember the old fable about the tortoise and the hare? The hare was boastful and thought he could outrun anyone, especially a turtle. He challenged the turtle to a race, confident in his ability to win. He was so confident that in the middle of the race, he felt so far ahead that he stopped to rest for a bit. But his arrogance got him in trouble. As he nonchalantly approached the finish line, the tortoise was already there.

Even when all seemed lost for the tortoise and those cheering him on, he never stopped. He kept walking steadily until he crossed the finish line, defeating the hare. Cheers rang out for the tortoise. He had defeated his opponent.

Victory!

As egotistical and arrogant as that hare was, he cannot begin to compare to our enemy, Satan. As he slithered his way into the garden of Eden, he was sure his plan to defeat God would work. He didn’t have to kill Adam and Eve; he only had to get them to doubt the goodness of God. Just one act of disobedience would ruin everything.

Satan thought he had won. He was sure his plan had succeeded and that God’s perfect creation was ruined.

But like that hare, Satan’s arrogance cost him everything.

Genesis 3:15 was the promise God made to destroy Satan, sin, and death. There would be One who would come, and even though Satan would attempt to stop Him, He would crush his head, defeating him.

For years, men and women waited for the One who would come and save them. The Messiah—prophets foretold of His coming, watching and waiting for the day He would be victorious.

He had come! The people would be saved! Jesus was the Messiah. But Satan, so sure of himself and his power, believed he could defeat Jesus and destroy God’s plan once again.

He tried everything. He tempted Jesus, brought about men who betrayed Him, led the Pharisees against Him, and as Jesus was nailed to a cross, all hope seemed lost.

Jesus suffered, died, and was buried; then a stone was rolled in front of the tomb. For three days, His people mourned.

Satan sat back and watched, feeling like he had won.

Until that third day…

He is alive! The Lord Jesus had died and rose from the grave!

Satan thought he had won, but he was defeated!

And today, we are awaiting the day when we will cross that finish line. Jesus already has. He has won! We will join Him in victory, overcoming the grave and death because of one thing.

Faith.

Faith in Christ, the Victor. Believing that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah who has all authority and power over death, hell, and sin.

When you cross that finish line at the moment of death, who you follow will determine if you too will be victorious. Have you put your faith in Jesus Christ? Are you following Him? That is the only way to be saved.
