“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice…”
In 1787, a set of laws was written to govern a new nation. The Constitution of the United States was created to ensure justice, liberty and, as stated, tranquility. These laws were to be upheld by the government and the people. Should a law be broken, whether it be by the people or the government, there would be punishment.
We simply took a page from history when we designed the constitution. With all authority, God Himself created the first set of laws to be followed by a nation. He set up the governing body, the officials, and the laws. There would be blessings if obeyed and punishment should they not.
“But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:” (Deuteronomy 28:15)
“Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young: And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee.” (Deuteronomy 28:47-51)
The more I read, the more it feels like it’s not just the Bible I’m reading, but the front page of the paper, or hearing a report on the news. Punishment for not following the Lord. A nation who declared themselves to be founded on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, has disobeyed His commandments, has pursued false gods, has lifted up abominations and praised them, and has forgotten the One true and Living God!
Brother against brother, mothers giving up their children to fulfill her own desires, plagues coming upon the disobedient… sound familiar?
So, what should we do? My heart aches for this nation and the turmoil it’s in. While I want to cry and shake my fist at God and say, “why are you letting this happen?” I know we are getting exactly what we deserve.
But just as Daniel sought the Lord continuously after being taken away to Babylon, we too must seek the Lord and pray for our country.
Pray for our leaders. Pray for the president. Pray for our churches, our missionaries, our freedoms, our families, our children’s salvation, and our return unto the Lord!
Pray!
