Say His Name

“I don’t even know what to say!”

My husband and I were headed up to the window. I could see the worried look on his face, but I reassured him, “I’ll help you.”

Coffee.

He knows what he likes, but when we get to a special coffee shop like Shadrachs, he just goes blank on how to order. So, he looks to me for help when he doesn’t know what to say.

Have you been there? Maybe not with coffee, but when life gets so overwhelming, situations arise, and you’re at a loss for what to say and how to pray.

The Lord knows. And He provides.

Romans 8:26-27
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.”

The Holy Spirit is a part of the Trinity – God the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. They are separate, yet they are one. When Jesus was preparing to give His life on the cross, He told His disciples that He was sending someone to help them, someone who could always be with them. He was sending the Holy Spirit.

At the moment of salvation, we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit of God. He guides our thoughts and directs our steps toward God and away from unrighteousness. He provides warnings when something isn’t right, He convicts us when we disobey or even when we are tempted to stray, and as Paul described in these verses, He intercedes on our behalf.

At times in my life, I’ve found myself at a complete loss for words. The heartache is unbearable, and shock and disbelief fill me with the unexpected news of loss. I try to pray to the Lord, but the words just won’t come. Like my husband looks to me at the coffee shop, we look to the Holy Spirit to speak for us.

He calls out to the Father on our behalf, according to the Lord’s will.

Isn’t that amazing?

There’s a beautiful, short song that speaks to this that says,

“Say the name of Jesus, say the name of Jesus
Say the name of Jesus, no other name I know
That can calm your fears, and dry your tears
And wipe away your pain;
When you don’t know what else to pray
When you don’t know what else to say
Say the name
Jesus…”

Whatever you’re dealing with, whatever the situation is, you can go to the Lord in prayer. He hears you. And the Holy Spirit will lead when you don’t know how to pray.

Just say the name. Jesus.
