Who is tired of road construction?
Just when I think I’m going to be on time for an appointment, bam! There’s a big orange sign that says “road construction ahead”. And get ready, because there will be waiting. Lots and lots of waiting. Oh, and bumps! Sometimes it feels like that hole they dug out is a magnet for my tire and it rattles my teeth loose every time I hit it.
They scrape away the old material, jack hammer up the worn out road and lay down new gravel and pavement. In one area, they decided to make a whole new road that is straighter than before. The old road would crook and curve, but this one, it’s just pretty straight.
As much as I dislike the road construction, won’t it be worth it?
As I was taking my father and mother in-law to the doctor, we hit a patch of road that was newly finished. He commented about how much smoother it was and the ride was a lot more enjoyable. You could drive better not having to swerve to miss the potholes anymore. It was nice!
Luke 3:4-6
“As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
John the Baptist began his mission. God called him to go and preach that the Messiah was coming. In those days, when a King was coming into town, messengers would go first and tell the people to prepare the roads.
Well, the King was coming. John was His messenger, and the message was to get ready for what God was going to do in their lives.
See, before Jesus, our lives are just like those old, messed up, pothole-filled roads. We make the decision to follow Christ, and then the construction begins. It’s not a quick and painless process to be more like Jesus. He continuously chips away at the old us, breaking down those old habits and tearing away at the sins that are buried beneath. The process can be grueling at times and we wait and wait, wishing it was over, but then we remember, it will be so worth it. Our path will be made straight. I won’t lie, there will still be bumps along the way, but my goodness, it’s like going from gravel to pavement. This way is soooo much better!
Is it time to begin road construction in your life? Or maybe you are in the midst of it, and it feels like it’s been taking forever. It’s worth it. Jesus is worth it. And the better your road is, the more you look and act like Christ, the more people will want to follow you down that road.
Make that decision today. It’s time to get started with the construction.
