There was nothing like the end of school and the start of summer. One of the things I looked forward to most was the little pool mom would set up for us in the yard. It wasn’t big by any means, but it was enough to get us wet and play in for hours.

The water was clear as glass when it was first filled. And cold! Man, was it cold!

In an effort to keep it clean, we had a little mat beside the pool with a bucket of water. We were supposed to dip our feet in and wash them off before jumping in.

And we did that a few times. But pretty soon, we weren’t as strict on the rule. We started just jumping in. A little dirt won’t hurt, right?

The pool was filthy. Dirt and grime seemed to take over. I didn’t want to swim in that anymore. We had to dump it and start again. Clean, fresh water had to be poured in.

Luke 19:45-48

“And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.”

The temple was a beautiful place meant for worship. This is the place where they would offer their sacrifice for their sins. Seeing an opportunity, men would set up tables to purchase animals needed for sacrifice. While that sounds good, and had some good intentions, little by little, the temple became what Jesus called a den of thieves. They were ripping the people off. And they were no better than the Romans they hated who taxed them beyond their means.

Soiled.

Dirty.

Grimey.

A need to be cleaned.

And that’s where Jesus came in.

He cleaned out the temple. But He didn’t stop there. It says that He taught daily in the temple.

Just as He does in us.

He came rushing in, cleansing us from the inside out. But He didn’t just leave us. He remains within, teaching us daily through the Holy Spirit.

Is it time to clean things up? Have we let our guard down and allowed the filth of this world soil us?

It’s time to let Jesus do what needs to be done in our lives.
