Would you stand in front of a microwave waiting for your popcorn if you didn’t believe the microwave would work?
Would you turn on a faucet without believing that water would spill out?
Would you plug in your hair dryer if you didn’t believe the electricity was there to make it work?
It sounds silly, doesn’t it?
Of course, we use these things and are expectant because we believe they work. We believe in their power to get the job done.
Acts 12:11-17
“Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.
13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.
14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.
17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.”
Peter had just been a part of an incredible miracle! An angel of the Lord had rescued him from death! He was about to be executed, and the Lord sent an angel to save him.
All the while, his friends were gathered together, praying. No doubt, Peter’s safety and return to them was a large focus of their prayers.
And then, a servant comes to tell them Peter is at the door. How miraculous!
It was the very thing they had been praying for!
“You’re crazy! It can’t be him! He’s in prison! It must be his ghost or angel.”
Seriously? They would believe it was a ghost or an angel of Peter rather than Peter himself.
Why?
Weren’t they praying? Did they not believe in the power of the One to whom they were praying?
God had answered their prayer and delivered their friend! Yet they couldn’t believe.
How often do we go into prayer, saying one thing but believing another? Are we skeptical of God’s power? Do we not believe that He has the power to do anything?
Oh, we of little faith.
Pray big, my friends! Pray earnestly, passionately, and boldly. Go before the Lord with thanksgiving and praise and make your requests known to Him, BELIEVING that He CAN do anything!
The Lord doesn’t always answer our prayers in the way we want Him to because He knows and sees more than we do.
But don’t limit Him.
Kneel at the throne. Pour out your heart and believe.
