Peace

This morning, we sat out on the back porch just listening. It was quiet. Not void of sounds – the birds were chirping and the hills seemed to be coming alive – but there was tranquility in all of it. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in.

Peace.

Even for a moment.

I knew there was a whole day ahead of me, but in this little moment, I found peace.

While my back porch is nice in the mornings, I can’t always get there when a situation comes up. It cannot be the place that I look to for peace when I need it most.

A true sense of peace can only be found in one place.

John 16:33
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus was continuing to comfort His disciples as He prepared to leave. He told them there would be trials, burdens, and troubles for them in this world, but they could find peace in Jesus knowing He had already conquered this world.

When we prepared for PawPaw to leave us, we sat beside his bed, talking to him, holding his hand, caring for him in the best ways that we could. His nurse said to us how different the reaction and grief is for the family of a believer verses a family who doesn’t know Jesus.

She said it was an awful and heartbreaking scene to watch when their loved one passed. They have no hope, nothing for reassurance, no peace at all.

But for a believer, it’s completely different.

How can someone have peace when their loved one passes away?

Because Jesus offers that to us. He fills us with His presence. We are overwhelmed with the knowledge that no matter what happens here on earth, it’s not the end. We know that putting our trust in Him means that we believe He will do what He promised.

He will be with us.

He will never leave or forsake us.

He will comfort us.

He will carry our burdens.

He will be our strong tower, our defense, our hiding place.

He will be our advocate.

He has prepared a place for us in Heaven.

He will return for us.

He has defeated sin, death and paid our debt so that we will not face the wrath of God that is poured out justly on sin.

We will be with Him.

How can we have peace?

Because Jesus is peace.
