O Ye of Little Faith

I sat in the nursery of Cord Baptist Church. It was after a Sunday night service and I was just a kid, but we had snuck down the old hall to the nursery to find some Cheerios and apple juice. There was a metal box on the floor and I picked it up, remembering the old toy.

It was that crazy little Jack in the Box. You push the joker down into the box and snap the lid closed and start turning the handle. You can even hear the music playing in your head now as you read… “All around the mulberry bush…” You know that nutty thing is about to jump up, but it still scares you have to death when it pops out of that box!

The disciples are with Jesus in the mountains where He’s been healing people by the droves for days. We ended our last lesson in Matthew 15 with verse 31 where it says the people marveled at the miracles of Jesus and glorified God.

“Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.” (Matthew 15:32-38)

How quickly we forget. It’s as if the disciples are turning the handle of that Jack in the Box just waiting to see what happens. They know! They saw with their own eyes what Jesus did before and how He took 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and fed 5,000 with 12 baskets of food left over. That was just in chapter 14! And yet, here they are again, knowing what Jesus can do, sitting with Him while He heals people, miracle after miracle, and yet they ask, where will we get enough food?

I just literally laughed out loud at them. Do you find yourself with a smile on your face thinking, those silly disciples? And then the smile fades. And you realize, oh ye of little faith. Why can’t I see that God will do that for me? I’ve seen His miracles play out in the pages of scripture. I know without a doubt He has done marvelous things in me! And yet, there is still shock or wonder that He might do it again? Why?

Just this week, my friend Lacy and I talked about the times God has failed us. I asked her to give me a list of every time she felt He let her down. After a few days of thought, she came back and said, I can’t name one. He hasn’t failed me, it’s me that’s failed Him.

We’ve seen His goodness time and time again. We’ve witnessed what He can do and we know what He’s promised to do, but… we turn the knob on the side of that box, wondering if He’s really going to show up.

He’s done it before and He will do it again. Do not doubt the power of the Almighty God! Be faithful in your prayers, believing that He can do that which is exceedingly abundantly all that we ask or think, according to His will.

Forgive us, Lord, for our unbelief. Let us trust in you today, Lord! Open our eyes and our hearts to your truth and let us remember your goodness and promises!
