Now what?

Have you asked yourself this lately? Or maybe someone else is asking you this. Graduates finishing high school or college and the first thing someone asks is, “now what?”

Something monumental has happened in life and now, you’re waiting for whatever comes next.

So, what do you do in the mean time? What if you don’t know what’s next? Or what if you do but you don’t know when it will come? Or maybe you need to make a decision about something but you’re terrified of making the wrong one.

This is what you should do.

Acts 1:12-14

“Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.
13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.”

Jesus had ascended to Heaven. Before He left, He told His disciples they would receive power through the Holy Spirit and then they would go and be His witnesses.

So, what now? They were waiting for these things to come to pass, but what should they do while they waited?

The same that you and I should do.

Pray.

The verse said they were of one accord in prayer and supplication.

Accord means to be consistent, in harmony and agreement. Supplication means a humble and earnest petition. To be of one accord in prayer and supplication meant that they were united in their prayers and requests to the Lord.

They knew, without a doubt, Jesus was the Messiah that they had waited so long for. In fact, it says Jesus’ brothers were now part of the group. They had denied Jesus’ claim of being the Son of God while He was on earth. But, now, seeing it for themselves, they could no longer doubt.

They knew what Jesus had called them to do. Once they received the Holy Spirit, they would be going out into the world to share about Jesus. But until then, they prepared. And the best part, the most important part, of their preparation that Luke decided to include in this passage, was to join together and pray.

Do you wish your prayer life was better? I think we all struggle with this area of our lives.

Who am I that God would hear me?

This is a question I often wonder. But let me tell you who you are.

You were created by God. You are His masterpiece. If you have been saved by the Lord through faith, you are His child; you’ve been adopted by the King. You are His beloved. And He wants to hear from you. The line of communication is open. Jesus made that happen. No longer is there division between us and God. The veil is torn and we have full access to the throne of God, the Holy of Holies.

Don’t find the time, make the time today, to seek the Lord in prayer and supplication.

The disciples could have been doing a number of different things, but they all agreed that the most important thing they could be doing at that very moment, was to pray.

Let us be found doing the same.
