Not Goodbye, Just Goodnight
212 Views

My brother is in sales and travels with his work. Sometimes he’s gone for a weekend, sometimes a week, and sometimes two weeks. No matter the length, I’m sure it feels like an eternity to my nephew.

My brother and his son are best buds. They do everything together and Witten wants to be just like his daddy. When he was just a baby, he didn’t really know or understand when his dad had to travel. But as he got older, he dreaded that moment.

He’d wrap his arms so tightly around his dad, crying, and asking him not to go. In his mind, it was goodbye. Chris would rub his back and hold him close, soothing his worries and cries.

“I’m just going away for a little bit. I’ll be back, I promise.”

As the father, he knew this was just temporary. But to the child, it feels like an eternity.

John 14:28-31

“Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.”

Jesus was going away and the disciples were hurting. They wanted Him there with them, physically. They still had so much to learn, see and do. How could they do this without Jesus with them?

To them it felt like goodbye. But Jesus knew it was more like goodnight.

He would return. And when He did, the disciples and all of the world would know what He said to be true. And they would believe.

There was a greater purpose to Jesus going away. Through His death He accomplished something far greater than His life could.

His death paid the debt of our sins. Of ALL of our sins. He defeated death, Hell and sin! He is victorious! And, just as He promised, He is coming again!

His purpose – to conquer the power of sin.
His plan – to redeem mankind to Himself.
His promise – to return again.
His power – would reveal the truth about who He is so that man might believe.

He’s coming back. Soon. Are you ready? Are you looking forward to His return?
