No One LIKE You In the Whole Wide World
54 Views

After our first child was born, I started repeating truths I wanted to make sure he really embraced to him, starting in infancy. Several times a day, I would look into his adorable face and tell him, “There is no one in the whole entire world just like you. God made you so uniquely, every part of you, and He did that on purpose. He wants to use you to do big things for Him, and making you exactly like He did is part of His plan.”

As a baby, he would just grin the sweetest baby grin, probably just reacting to my attention. As he got older, he would smile at me and say, “God made me!”

I wanted him to really KNOW God’s promise from Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

It was very important to me that my child understood that God had big plans for him, that He made him on purpose for a purpose, that nothing about him was a mistake, and that he could remind himself of those truths if he ever started to question things about himself as he got older.

We all have insecurities/things we would prefer not to struggle with as we grow. I wanted to make these truths so ingrained in my child that he would never question if parts of him were mistakes for very long. He could know that God made every part of him, every detail, with a purpose and plan in mind.

As a first-time parent, I would give myself a little pat, because I just KNEW “I was killing it at this parenting gig.” I would think to myself, “He’s so little, and he already knows God made him exactly the way he is so that he can live out the plan God has for his life.”

Hahaha!

Now that I am a parent of three, and I have parented long enough to recognize how much “I don’t got this parenting gig,” I can tell you that any good in my children has nothing to do with me. It’s all God.

So, after years of hearing my mantra about how unique my child was, he looked at me quizzically, tilted his head, and asked, “So, WHY doesn’t anyone like me?”

I was truly confused. I said, “Oh, honey, everyone who knows you loves you so much! Who wouldn’t like you?”

I even took on a “mama bear” tone and asked, “Who said people don’t like you?!”

He looked at me so innocently and said, “Well, you tell me they don’t all the time.”

Oh my! It started to hit me.

“No way, kiddo! I am so sorry. That’s not what Mommy has been trying to tell you. You are so, so loved… and liked. What I have been telling you is that God made you exactly the way you are on purpose. He has big plans for you, and those plans are why He made you you. No one else in the whole, wide world is exactly like you. They are exactly like God chose to make them. You are the only you, and that’s great! God did that on purpose. He loves every hair on your head, freckle on your nose, and every part of your personality. He gave you things you are really good at and things you might have to work a little harder at, too. None of that was an accident. He did all of that because He loves you and has big plans for you. Those things you are good at and those things that are hard are all part of that plan. Does that make sense?”

My little boy seemed appeased by my answer, was smiling again, and said, “I think so.”

I couldn’t help but wonder how certain he was that people still liked him, though. My heart broke, and I prayed one of many prayers that God would intervene and help my child understand truth, even when I mess up.

I continued to repeat this truth, but I was certain to emphasize my words more clearly after that. Poor kid!

Really, though, don’t we all need to remind ourselves of this truth pretty often? We have strengths and weaknesses built into our DNA. (We have sin, too, which is a whole different discussion.) I am sure I’m not the only person who ever thought, “I wish I could sing like… I wish I was more talented in this area… I wish I didn’t struggle so much with…”

God uses all of those parts of me… and you… for His glory and the good of His people.

So, here’s your reminder: There is no one in the whole, entire world EXACTLY like you. God made you so uniquely, every part of you, and He did that on purpose. He wants to use you to do big things for Him, and making you exactly like He did is part of His plan. You are the only you on purpose. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else.
