Music is Good for the Soul
3071 Views

Isn’t it great how music takes you back? Memories flood your mind of a different place and time.

Every time I hear “Turn the Page”, I’m back in my dad’s little, red Nissan single-cab truck, heading down the highway with his hands thumping the steering wheel as we both belt out the words, off-key.

The Geico commercial comes on with Tag Team scooping the ice-cream and I’m back in the 5th grade at Lindsey’s house, making up dance moves to “Whoop There it Is”.

A new song comes on and within seconds you can identify it just by a couple of notes. “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” starts blaring, and I’m with Danae and Tara headed to Florida in the Ford Taurus for summer break.

Man. I could go on and on. Music is good for the soul. Sometimes, a song is perfect for the moment. It just hits different when it speaks to your heart and the situation you’re dealing with or the joy that’s bursting through you!

“And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.”

Luke 1:45-55

Mary is with her cousin Elisabeth. Both have just learned of one another’s pregnancies and the significance of what their sons will do. Elisabeth is elated that Mary has come to visit. Not just because she is her cousin, but she is honored to have Mary and the coming Messiah in her home. She breaks out into praise to God for His blessings!

Mary also breaks out into a praise in what is referred to as Magnificat. It’s a song of praise and glory unto God for His mighty works and plan. She was honoring Him with her song that spoke of thanks and gratefulness for all that He was doing! Mary’s song was perfect for the moment.

What song would describe your life and what God is doing or has done for you? Melodies and lyrics are zipping through my mind at warp speed of songs that could describe our lives.

Casting Crowns has a song that says “I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, all about somebody, who saved my soul. Ever since you rescued me, you gave my heart a song to sing, I’m living for the world to see, nobody but Jesus.” This one just hits deep. Who am I, Lord? I am blown away at your monumental work in my life. I am not who I once was. You have changed me! And now, you are choosing to use me.

The beat changes and I hear the voice of Matthew West singing “What if today’s the only day I got? I don’t wanna waste it if it’s my last shot, No regrets in the end, I wanna know I got no what ifs. I’m running till the road runs out I’m lighting it up right here right now, No regrets in the end. I wanna know I got no what ifs!” I want to know that at the end of the day, I have poured out everything I have for you, Lord! I don’t want to look back and think, “I should have told them about Jesus.” I don’t want scenarios of what ifs running through my mind!

What about you? Have you heard a song recently that really spoke to your heart? Is it one you have used to praise the Lord for what He is doing or has done in your life? Or maybe it’s one you have created. Or maybe it’s a scripture, like out of Psalms, that you could sing to the Lord for His greatness!

What are you waiting for? Praise Him now!

Praise Him, Praise Him
Tell of His excellent greatness!
