A woman was given a task by her boss. He asked her to evaluate her co-worker’s performance and determine a set of standards for her job and pay. The woman took the job seriously, so she set to work.
She peeked around every corner, jotted down every break, made note of personal phone calls, put a check by every non-work related conversation, and policed the copy machine.
When the day was done, she handed over her business report to the boss. “There it is. All accounted for. I think you’ll find this report gives you everything you need to measure her success.”
The boss scanned the paper and set it down on his desk. He clasped his hands together and leaned back. “I appreciate your thoroughness and willingness to be so…strict in your recommendations. I’ll take them into consideration.”
Feeling good about herself, she returned to her desk to close up for the evening.
The next day, she opened her email to find a memo from the boss.
“All employees will now be evaluated on the following items. Your pay will be measured upon the success of these things listed.”
As she looked at the list, her heart sank. Why had she been so critical of her co-worker? She didn’t cut her any slack at all! And now, everyone, including her, would be under the scrutiny of management.
“Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Luke 6:37-38
Last night, I attended a writer’s meeting via zoom. Our host asked us to write for two minutes about something we loved about God. Mine focused on the mercy and grace God has shown to me. With more time, I would broaden that list and write of His forgiveness and unconditional love.
Mercy. Grace. Forgiveness. Love.
These are the things I love that God offers to me. Yet, the question is, do I offer them in return to others?
What if God gave you the same amount of mercy, grace, forgiveness and love that you showed to others?
“For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Convicting.
I want to be more like Christ. I want to show others the same kindness He has shown me. I know I fail but He is faithful to continue to show me how I can change.
