Mac & Cheese and Bold Faith

What’s your favorite food?

It seemed like a simple question, but at 7 years old, it felt more like a dividing line between classes.

I sat at a little table in a Sunday School classroom. Other kids I vaguely knew sat around the table with me. Their slacks, dresses, and shoes were newer and shinier than mine. Even at that age, I knew the difference between our family and others.

It was Amber’s turn to share. “Macaroni and cheese,” she declared softly.

What?! I was shocked! This was Amber. She was one of the kids I considered to be rich, and she was eating mac and cheese? Wasn’t that just for poor people?

I hadn’t expected that at all.

And yet, when it came my turn, I felt a little more confident in my response. “I love mac and cheese too.”

Philippians 1:12–14
“And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News. For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ. And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.”

Imagine being a believer in Christ in Rome. They were few and far between and certainly didn’t put out signs in their front yard. They feared persecution for their beliefs. But when they learned Paul was there—in prison for proclaiming Christ—and that he continued sharing even in confinement—something changed. They became bold in declaring the truth about who Jesus is. They loved Christ and were devoted to Him. They were willing to risk whatever persecution might come by sharing this truth.

What if someone close to you is waiting for you to take that stand? Someone who thinks highly of you, respects you, and would feel more confident if they saw you share your faith?

A declaration of love for mac and cheese had a huge impact on me at 7, but a declaration of love for Jesus carries eternal impact.

How can you share Christ with someone today? Maybe it’s a social media post, a conversation with the young man who takes your coffee order every morning, or signing up to lead a class in your church. Or maybe it’s taking that next step and becoming a disciple-maker.

If you’ve been thinking about it but have never felt prepared, I’d love to help.
