Let His Light Shine Through You

I watched with amazement as bright colors danced across the curtains. Little rainbows of purple, yellow, red and blue. I moved the prisms on the lamp and the rainbows began to move once again, back and forth across the white sheers.

My mind was whirling with questions. How did these colors appear? Were they trapped inside the little prism and the light set it free? I examined the clear, glass structure, mesmerized by it and thinking how wonderful this little thing was. But then, my grandmother turned off the light.

The rainbows vanished.

And the prism was simply a piece of glass. Nothing mesmerizing about it now.

My grandmother explained that these little glass pieces had a special job and it was to reflect the light from the main source. And when they did, it made the most beautiful picture of what the light was. But alone, the prism was just a regular piece of glass.

John 1:6-9

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

John. In scripture, he is known as John the Baptist or John the Baptizer. He’s not to be confused with the author John, these were two different men. John the Baptist was actually a cousin to Jesus, born just months before Him, to Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth and her husband Zachariah.

In this passage, we learn that John had a special purpose from God. He was to be a witness of the Light. From our previous readings, we defined who the light was – Jesus. So, John was to be a witness of Jesus. He was to reflect the light.

Just like that little prism.

Jesus, the true Light, shines brightly. John, the prism, reflected that light to the world and it showed just how beautiful Jesus was and the promise that He had come to fulfill.

Did you know God sent you with a purpose, too? Like John, we have been created and designed to reflect the light and be a witness of who Jesus is. Without the true source, Jesus, we are nothing. But when we accept Him as our Savior, the light shines through us and reveals the beauty of His salvation and who He is.

Are we reflecting the light? Or have we become so distant from the true source that we don’t shine anymore?

Let His light shine through you and the colors of His love dance for all to see!
