Isn’t It Ironic?

Back in the 90s, which feels like yesterday for some of us until we realize that was 30 years ago, a little crazy song came out called “Ironic”. Alanis Morisette pointed out various examples like rain on your wedding day, a free ticket when you’ve already paid, you get the picture.

I think it’s safe to say we’ve all had some type of similar experience at one time or another. As I was reading through our text this morning, I re-read the passage from yesterday. And that little song came to mind.

Isn’t it ironic?

Here’s the scripture again in Luke 22.

“When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.”

The religious leaders had come to take Jesus as night. Immediately, He was taken to the high priest.

The Jews were determined to rush things along. One, to escape the crowds and the backlash. But mainly it was because they wanted the execution of Jesus to be done by the Sabbath so they could get on with the celebration of the Passover.

Isn’t it ironic?

They wanted to kill Jesus, the Savior, the innocent, unblemished, sacrificial lamb that would pour out His blood, the One who would save them from death so they could celebrate their people being saved from death because they put the blood of the innocent, unblemished, sacrificial lamb on their doorpost.

Blank stare.

Can you imagine? Killing Jesus to celebrate Jesus… like, what?

But don’t we do it every day? Let me explain.

I’ve been guilty of being so busy about doing things in Christ’s name that I would forsake spending time with Christ Himself. I would pass over the Word in order to organize an event. I would give up prayer time in order to plan out who needed to be served in the church.

We could come up with a gazillion more examples, but just like that little song, I think you get the picture by now.

How ironic.

And sad.

Does that not break your heart? Man, it does mine.

Today, let’s allow the Lord to shine His truth into our lives, searching our intent and refocus on what’s really important.

Don’t miss it.

The Jewish leaders did.
