It’s hard to capture into words what the eyes behold and the heart feels.

I’ve seen some beautiful things in this life, and my descriptions just don’t do them justice. The fall colors of the maples in Vermont, lining the curvy roads through the Green Mountains – deep reds, oranges and bright yellows. The variations in color were so brilliant! But to try to describe it so you get the picture and feel the awesomeness of it too… well, you just had to be there.

The turquoise waters of Belize, stretching as far as the eye can see, meeting the bluest sky you can imagine. The vibrant colors, the crystal clear waters, the sound of the crashing waves, and the sun shimmering off the water… it’s hard to describe the scene, to make you see exactly what I did. Even my best attempts fall short. You just had to be there.

Now it’s your turn. I’m sure there’s some scene that has this beautiful picture seared into your memory. Even your pictures couldn’t capture the magnificence of what you saw. Whether it’s mountains, sunsets, fields of wildflowers, waterfalls, or even the moment you saw your newborn baby for the first time, it’s hard to capture into words what the eyes behold and the heart feels.

“Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.” (Exodus 24:9-11)

Can you imagine? These men saw God. Not in a burning bush, not in a pillar of smoke, not in the wind, but the actual God! I can’t even begin to know what I would have done. I probably would have been so awestruck that I would immediately fall to the ground worshiping Him, unworthy to even behold Him.

But these men did see and they tried to describe Him the best they could. Blue sapphire, have you seen it? In its raw form, you can get lost in the depth of color. It’s beyond incredible. And that’s what they saw under God’s feet. Then it describes the body of Heaven “in his clearness”. This word actually means His “brightness” or His “glory”. How would you describe that? It’s hard to capture into words what the eyes behold and the heart feels.

Years ago, Mercy Me came out with a song “I can only imagine”. So real and raw, he puts our questions into song… what will you do when you see Jesus?

Will you stand before Him as His child, covered by His grace and mercy? Or will you stand before Him in judgment?

We may not know how to describe Him or what we will do when we see His glory, but the Bible tells us that we ALL will fall before Him.

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11)

How beautiful He must be!
