In the Twinkling of an Eye

I’ve always been amazed at technology—how it has progressed through the years and transformed our way of life.

Take the ultrasound, for example. How incredibly awesome it is that we can see the image of life forming in the womb by the use of sound waves! And to think it all started with bats! An Italian physicist was studying how bats could fly at night and theorized that it was through the use of sound waves. More than 150 years later, that discovery was applied in medicine for diagnostic purposes. Since then, the imaging has drastically improved, now offering 3-D and 4-D imaging—and all by the use of sound.

What was once a mystery has now been revealed, yet it still fills us with amazement!

1 Corinthians 15:51–53 (NIV):
“Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthian believers, he corrected their misunderstandings about bodily resurrection. He reminded them that Christ had risen from the dead—His Spirit and His body. Like Christ, we too will be raised from the dead—both spirit and body.

Then Paul shares with them this incredible mystery that, to this day, still leaves us in awe of God.

The rapture.

Not everyone will die. He uses the word sleep as was common in their culture. Some will be immediately changed into their glorified body and be taken to heaven without experiencing death.

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.

How fast do you think that is? Well, just blink. Not a long, drawn-out eye-roll type of blink, but more like the quick flutter of a Southern belle’s lashes meant to catch the eye of a young man.

Instantaneous. That’s how fast it is.

And it will be announced by the sound of the trumpet. In their culture, they were used to this type of call. Trumpets were blown to signal the start of a feast or event.

Those who are alive will be taken to heaven, their bodies instantly transformed. Those who have already died before this moment, their bodies will be raised from the ground and changed to be reunited with their spirit.

“For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”

Because that is how we will enter a perfect and holy heaven.

Is it still a mystery that leaves us in awe and wonder? Absolutely! Yet we know it to be true because the Word of God is clear.

And here’s the most important part of all of this. Who is Paul speaking to?

Believers.

Those who have believed in Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life will be the ones who receive glorified bodies and enter heaven. When that trumpet sounds, it will call the Lord’s people home.

But what about those who have not accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior?

They will face the wrath of a holy God for their sin.

When will all this occur?

At any moment, that trumpet could sound.

The question is, are you ready?

Today is the day of salvation! It is no coincidence that you are reading this right now. God is calling you. He wants you to be His child. He offers redemption and forgiveness for your sins and eternal life for all who will believe in Him.
