I am a Servant of Christ

“Hi! My name is Yalanda and I’m the Director of…”

I was typing out an email the other day to a well-known pastor that I recently heard at a conference requesting him to be on a show I do on Tuesday nights.

He doesn’t know me. I needed to introduce myself. But why did I begin with that? Why did I feel the need to throw out a title first? Does it sound prestigious? Do I think it gives me some authority or a position of respect?

As I read back over Paul’s letter to the Romans, I marveled at how he introduced himself.

Acts 1:1
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God”

A servant.

What is a servant?

One who belongs to a master. One who does the will of his master, putting his needs above his own. One who relies on his master for all things. One who serves.

However, Paul was a high-ranking religious leader of the Pharisees. And above all things to his Roman audience, he was a Roman citizen. Wasn’t being called a servant beneath him? Wasn’t that an unthinkable status for someone like him?

Paul chose to be a servant of Christ. He fully relied on the Master for all things and was obedient to His will.

He didn’t always consider himself to be a servant. This lowly position came after his humbling experience with Jesus. See, that’s the thing about Christ. When we have truly encountered Him, we are changed. We recognize His holiness. This makes us see ourselves for who we really are – sinful. We are humbled before Him and acknowledge His power and authority over us. We realize the monumental debt He paid on our behalf and fully surrender. We choose to serve Him out of love, thankfulness, and respect.
