As I sat on the couch, watching TV, I could hear a snicker come from behind me. I turned to see what it was, and there was the face of my 15 year old brother. Smiling that goofy smile and snickering under his breath, he was “invisible”.
It was a dumb game we played. Well, it really wasn’t much of a game. But we thought it was hilarious to see how close he could get sneaking up on me without me ever seeing him. And even when I caught him, he was still “invisible”, acting like I couldn’t see him.
But there he was. Right beside me. He thought he had me fooled, but I could see right through him.
Luke 20:20-26
“And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar’s.
25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.
26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.”
The Pharisees were determined to get rid of Jesus. They devised a plan to send in spies to pretend to be interested in following Jesus’ teaching.
It says “they feigned themselves just men”. Which means they pretended to be honest. They thought they could act the part, trick Jesus and He would never be the wiser until it was too late.
They thought they had Him fooled, but He could see right through them.
He knew what they were up to and He answered in such a way that left them amazed and silent.
Do we think we can fool God? Who are we pretending to be? Are we playing the part of a “good” Christian and think we can pull one over on the Lord?
He can see right through us.
He knows our intentions, our motives and our hearts. He knows the schemes we have worked up in our minds and how we think they will play out.
He knows.
So why do we even try?
We’re foolish.
Surrender to the Lord today. No more pretending. No more playing. Just full surrender.
A true relationship with Jesus.
