He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully. (Proverbs 10:5)
This coming Sunday, I am preaching in Denver to a great church that is deeply pursuing God. I’ve been with them twice in the last 24 months, and each time my expectation grows for this great church and its hungry leaders.
The pastor is preaching through Acts, and he asked me to preach on Acts 4:31. The disciples were being persecuted, and they were afraid. They gathered and prayed, not for safety or comfort, but for boldness. And then it says this:
And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:31)
This models for us for all time something critical. It was right on the heels of Pentecost, and God was sending a great harvest. Rapid growth was happening in the early church. People were open and receptive to the gospel. It was not a time to hide or cower or sleep. It was harvest time, and lives were at stake.
RIGHT NOW
… our nation is in a season of harvest. All around us, particularly among GenZ, tens of thousands of people are coming to Christ. There is an openness and receptivity to the gospel that is only found in such times. Just as you would expect, there is also a rising tide of persecution. Satan will not leave such a season unopposed. But the church—your church, my church, and each individual Christian must decide what they will do.
During a harvest in the Arkansas farmlands, you will never see a farmer sleeping past dawn or coming in before sundown. Not much television is watched, unless it’s a close eye on the weather. All hands are on deck, even neighbors come in to help during harvest. Extra hands are brought in.
God is giving us a wonderful season of harvest across our nation. The lives of the next generation are at stake and the future of nations. May God’s people be found aggressive, joyful, and faithful. May we not take our hands off the main task. It’s harvest time.
