Where are your candles stored?

I can remember precisely where the candles were at my grandma’s house. She had a buffet in the kitchen by a table. The candles were in the top, middle drawer. We knew exactly where to go for light if the power went out. We’d get down on our hands and knees and crawl through the house to get there to make sure we didn’t fall along the way.

Nowadays, the only candles we have at our house are for smell-good purposes only. I’m sure that would be fine in the event of power failure, but it sure might make you feel like you just walked into Bath and Body Works.

In most areas of the house, we have flashlights stored. If the power goes out, there’s a flashlight close by, ready to light the way. We keep them handy because we know we will need them. How difficult it is to traverse this house in the dark! We’d be bumping into tables, chairs, cabinets, dogs, tripping over footstools, shoes, and rugs. Without light, you’re blindly feeling your way through the darkness, hoping to get somewhere safely.

John 8:12
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

Jesus was in the treasury of the temple as He spoke these words. Why is that important to know? This was not only where the collection boxes were placed for offerings but also where candles were burning. This symbolized the pillar of fire that led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness. We know from reading in Exodus 13 that the Lord Himself was within the fire leading them.

In this moment, Jesus, yet again, claims His deity.

Jesus is not only the Son of God; He is one with God. He is God.

Remember John 1:1?
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Just as God led the people before as they traversed unknown lands, Jesus offers to light the way through the darkness of this world.

Not just for the people in His day but for you and me today.

This world can feel like we’re wandering around in the darkness. At any moment, we could be in danger of being unable to see the path before us.

Do you know where the candles are stored? Do you know where to go for light? Do you know where to find Jesus?

The best place to find Him is on your knees. The beautiful thing about our Lord is that He is always available and easily accessible. Call out His name – “Jesus!” and the conversation begins. Open up the Bible and learn about who He is, what He did for us, and the light He offers to those who believe.

Oh, great light of the world!
