Guilt. Shame. Fear. Loneliness. Empty. Searching, grasping, and falling.
“What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of?”
This is the question Paul posed to the Roman believers in Romans 6:21. And this is the question I could hear him asking me today.
The KJV reads, “What fruit had ye then.”
And those were my fruits. Anything before Christ, the fruits that my actions bore were negative, worthless, and empty.
The rest of that verse shows what the result is of our sin.
“Those things result in death!”
That’s who we are apart from Christ. There is nothing good within us. Even what we think is our best is fruitless and full of shame. We have sinned against an almighty God. Our sinfulness throws daggers at the King of Kings. We spew lies and hate in his face and flaunt our lust before His eyes.
And here is the wonderful, incredible, mind-blowing news – God doesn’t want to leave us there. He sees us, knows our sin, and still loves us enough to leave everything to give His life for us.
Because of Jesus Christ, we can have forgiveness and be made righteous.
“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
A gift awaits us today. It’s not something we’ve earned or deserve. Heavens no. We could never do enough or clean enough to make us worthy.
But Jesus can.
And He did.
And today, He calls out to the hearts of all people to come to Him. Give up your shame, guilt, and hurt, and surrender to the Lord Jesus, the One who loves, transforms, and leads us!
