When did you know your significant other was “the one”?
How did you respond?
Those questions prompt sweet memories to many of us as we look back to the early stages of our relationships.
Was it love at first sight? Or did it take a while and they had to grow on you a bit for you to fall for them? Or maybe you were not able to get rid of them… (Just kidding)
When we look at Genesis 29 this week, we see another love story.
Jacob has left his home and he was headed to his kinsmen to find a wife.
He arrives at a well and talks with a shepherd there with his sheep. He inquires about Laban, his uncle, and the man says he knows him. He says Laban’s daughter is actually on her way to the well right now.
“Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s kinsman, and that he was Rebekah’s son, and she ran and told her father.” (Genesis 29:10-12)
Jacob knows Rachel is the one for him.
He has just had this marvelous encounter with God at Bethel right before this where he saw angels going to and from heaven to earth on a ladder and God blessed him and promised to give him many children, just as He had promised his father and grandfather.
So, when he sees Rachel, knowing she is of the right family for him to marry, he knows she is the one to be his bride.
Just as Jacob responds to the knowledge of this blessing, so should we. Jacob has found his love, a gift from God, and rejoices!
Jesus, a beautiful gift from God, offers His love to us as well. We must receive that gift and thank God for the beautiful blessing He has given us.
Jesus Christ loves you like none other. He loves you so much He gave His life for you so you can live. And not just to live for a moment, a few years or even a lifetime. He offers you eternal life spent in heaven!
As I realize what Christ has offered me, and how much He loves me, I respond with praise and joyous tears. How crazy is it that the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings, the Almighty Creator wants to know me, spend time with me, and carry my burdens?
He wants that with you too.
Today, rejoice that you have found your true love, Jesus Christ, and worship Him for His goodness and mercy!
