The moment I held them in my arms, I knew there was nothing more perfect. Their eyes so big and full of wonder, dancing from here to there, taking it all in. Their tiny little noses, so perfectly shaped. Those beautiful lips, so sweet and full. The moment they grabbed a hold of my hand, those tiny fingers wrapping around mine, I was doomed.
Oh, how I love being an aunt to my sweet babies. I want them to know they are loved, feel cherished, nurtured, and encouraged. But I also want them to know they are safe. I would go to great lengths to protect them from harm.
Wouldn’t you?
In Leviticus chapter 20, God lays out the punishments for sin. He’s gone through His commandments and then says, this is what will happen if you don’t obey them.
The very first thing He addressed was a horrible act common among pagan religions.
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones. And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name. And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.” (Leviticus 20:1-5)
Sacrificing their own children. I cannot fathom even having the thought. These people really believed in gods that they thought would be appeased if they killed their children as a sacrifice to them.
How could a mother do such a thing? How could anyone be willing to willing give up their child and watch them be murdered?
God’s word is clear. This practice was vile in His eyes and would not be tolerated. It went against the very character of God.
My bible commentary describes these characteristics.
He is a loving God, he prohibited murder because He is the giver of life, He helps those that are helpless, especially children, and He is unselfish. Instead of demanding human sacrifices, He sacrifices Himself for us!
Did you know that on average, a baby is aborted every 96 seconds? In fact, according to Worldometers, a website that uses reporting from the world’s governments to track demographics and vital statistics, abortion was the leading cause of death in 2019.
We are no different than the people of ancient times. They sacrificed their children to appease the pagan gods and we sacrifice them in the name of freedom. We call it choice.
His word still stands. Murdering children is detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Life begins at conception. The same tiny fingers that grasp my hand were formed in the mother’s womb. The same beautiful eyes and nose, and the heart that beats in the outside of the mother is the same heart that beats on the inside.
Here’s what I want you to know. If you are pregnant and considering an abortion, there are options. Do not think this is the only way. If you have had an abortion before, you know the weight you carry of that decision. I want you to know that God loves you and He is merciful and gracious to those who call out to Him in repentance. Do not think you are forgotten or discarded by God. He forgives in ways we cannot even begin to understand.
As believers in Christ, we cannot simply pick and choose the scriptures we will stand for. You can’t say God is love without also saying He is just. We must stand for what is right. We must speak for those that have no voice. We must stand for the unborn child!
