Eternal Miracles
291 Views

Thirteen years ago, I sat on a little cot inside a hospital room, praying for God to heal my father. He had struggled for a long time, physically and emotionally, and in my mind, if his heart were healed, he would be better. I could help care for him, and we would enjoy several more good years together.

But a few days later, my father passed away. And believe it or not, I rejoiced. Why? How can I say such a thing?

Because God doesn’t give us what is good; He gives us what is best. He doesn’t provide a temporary fix; He works miracles that are eternal.

God healed my father in the greatest way possible. I was hoping for a few more years, but God gave my dad an eternity, a heart that never grows weary, legs that can run and never grow weak, and freedom from all pain.

John 2:1-11
“And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”

Weddings were a big deal. They would have week-long feasts and celebrations, and if you got invited, you had to attend. There were LOTS of people at the wedding, which meant they would need lots of provisions for the feasts.

Mary, Jesus’ mother, wasn’t asking Him to work a miracle. In her mind, they had a problem, and she was asking her son to find a solution.

“Help me fix this.”

To her, finding another pot of wine somewhere would be the answer. They could continue for a little longer. But, they would again be in the same predicament when that wine ran out. Mary was asking for a temporary fix.

But Jesus brought a miracle.

Even today, as I pray to the Lord, I ask Him to bring healing to my father-in-law. Of course, we want him to be healed on earth and enjoy more time with him, but God…

God doesn’t give us what is good; He gives us what is best. He doesn’t provide a temporary fix; He works miracles that are eternal.

And that’s what I’m praying for this morning. Lord, bring about a miracle. Do what’s best for him. Not what’s best in my tiny thoughts, but what you deem is perfect, right, and best.

You may need that today, too. Even though it’s all we know, don’t settle for what is good.

God is prepared to give you what is best.

Wait upon the Lord.
