I heard a young lady make a statement: “And that’s God to me.”
The truth is, God isn’t who we think Him to be, who we feel Him to be, or even what we imagine Him to be. Our minds, hearts, and biggest dreams could never dare to come close to tipping the iceberg of who God truly is.
I was just as guilty as this girl once, too. I believed God existed, but I formed Him out of others’ opinions. I took a little from this one, and that one, and, ooh yeah, that sounds good, and I put it all together and said, “This is who God is.” When in reality, all I had done was create some worthless idol.
It wasn’t God at all.
How do I know? Because when I learned the truth about God, when His Word was opened to me, I was completely and utterly wrecked. Nothing in it justified “this is who I am.” I could no longer stand with my head held high. I was brought to my knees.
Because when we recognize the truth about who God is, we see the truth about who we are.
Broken.
Unworthy.
Self-centered.
Prideful.
Lustful.
Arrogant.
Deceitful.
God created us beautiful, unique, and for a purpose. Sin has corrupted us and destroys us day after day. But unless we hear the truth, unless we go to His WORD, we will look to ourselves as the one who determines our fate. We need to know the truth about God.
The God who spoke and the earth was formed.
The God who was before all things and has always existed.
The God who declares He alone is God and worthy of praise.
The God who is the Righteous Judge. The Almighty. The King of Kings.
The God who is love.
The God who is all-knowing, all-seeing, ever-present.
The God who put a plan in motion to redeem mankind to Himself.
The God who was willing to sacrifice His only Son so that we could be saved from eternity in Hell for our sins.
The God of second chances.
The God who calls us to Himself.
The God who conquered death and Hell.
The God who lives!
The God who knows our yesterdays, today, and tomorrow.
Do you know HIM?
The Alpha and Omega, the Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace, the Everlasting Father, the Redeemer, the Sanctifier, the Author and Finisher of our Faith, the Lord of All.
Do you know that He loves you? And His desire is to rescue you from a life filled with sin and separation. He wants to bring you into a relationship with Him, to commune, to cast your cares on Him, to be your strength, your rock, and your strong fortress.
Do you know that?
Because to know God means to know His Word. And to know His Word means to know Jesus. And to know Jesus means to know truth. And to know truth means to know we are sinners destined for Hell without the salvation Christ offers. Our only response is to surrender ourselves—our plans, our desires, our thoughts, our actions—everything to the Lord and trust in Him. Our purpose is to glorify God.
To know God is to bow before Him and allow His Holy Spirit to work within us, to make us a new creation.
That’s what it is to know God. Not because I said so, but because the Bible, God’s Word, does.
Isaiah 40:28-31
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.
29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
