On a clear night, out here in the country, you can gaze up at the sky filled with stars. Everywhere you look, tiny glistening lights dazzle and dance in the dark. As the dark fades and the sun comes up over the horizon, shades of pink, orange, and yellow illuminate the sky. The darkness is gone because of the beautiful light from the sun cascading through the trees.
As I look at these two beautiful scenes, I’m in awe. How majestic! How incredible! How amazing!
And that’s when the thought hits – how did it get here?
Every masterpiece has to have a creator. Who put all of this together? There is something inside each of us that, in that moment, ponders and wonders, could God truly exist? Is He the one who created all of this? Did He create me?
The creation proves His existence and reveals His character to us.
Romans 1:19-20
“since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
20 For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
Not only did God create the universe and all things within it, but He also created us with a wonder inside to look upon that creation and know that something powerful and eternal had to have made it.
And because those stars shine in the sky, because the sun rises and colors fill the earth, and because we live and breathe, we either choose to believe God exists or He doesn’t.
If we decide to believe in the truth that God is real, what then?
What do we know about the God who created all of this?
And this is where I found myself for many years.
I believed God existed but didn’t know the truth about Him. I chose to believe what I would hear about Him from others. I knew the Bible told me about Him, but I never opened it and studied it to discover more.
Why not?
I didn’t understand what I was reading and would close it as quickly as I opened it. I didn’t even know where to begin. Genesis seemed like a good spot, but once you got to the “begets,” I grew bored and thought, how is this telling me anything I need to know?
So, I began to do what I thought was right.
Even when I knew it was wrong.
Romans 1:21-23
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.”
This was me. I knew God existed, yet I didn’t try to learn about Him, not from His truth. I exchanged the true God for one I created in my mind. I didn’t realize it then, but I was just as guilty of creating and worshipping an idol as these people were.
So, what happened as a result? What did God allow to happen to these people who were supposed to be His?
“Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.
25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”
Sound familiar? Maybe it wasn’t sexual impurity for you, but fill in the blank with any lustful desire, and we’re guilty.
Is that it? Is there no hope? Is God’s punishment the end?
Here is the most beautiful and amazing quality about God – His ongoing pursuit of His creation. For redemption. For relationship. For restoration.
Maybe you’ve never believed God is real or that He’s the Creator. Let me show you.
Maybe you’ve believed God exists but don’t truly know Him. Let me show you.
Maybe you know Him, and you’ve been running from Him, choosing your own way, and it’s left you empty. You want to find your way back. Let me show you.
This is what I needed; maybe you do, too. Let me walk with you and show you the truth about who Jesus is and what it means to call Him Lord. Let me show you what a life that is surrendered to Him looks like. Go to follow.lifeword.org. I’ll meet you there.
Psalm 19:1-4
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens, God has pitched a tent for the sun.”
