Cultivating Humility

“Rejoice with those who rejoice (sharing others’ joy), and weep with those who weep (sharing others’ grief).” – Romans 12:15 (AMP)

We all need Jonathan’s story. Mentally flip through your rolodex of friendships and it takes about a nanosecond to determine if there are any Jonathans. Remarkable in their own right, Jonathans are content to be second. They understand their talents and choose the supporting role to execute God’s bigger plan. Their view is that we are all better together…not competitively, but collectively. Their spiritual maturity is rare, refreshing, and worthy of repetition.

By the world’s standards, the biblical Jonathan may not have been counted worthy or exemplary, but you’d have a tough time convincing David of that! Jonathan personified the virtues that Peter wrote about in 2 Peter 1:5-7: diligence, godliness, brotherly affection, and love.

No, Jonathan may not be mentioned in the Hebrew’s 11 “Hall of Fame”, but his spiritual maturity was unquestionable. Jonathan was an influencer used by the Lord (alongside David) to possess a heroic faith, unquestionable courage, and self-sacrificing friendship. He got so much right! By doing so, he not only resembled Christ, but drew others to know and walk more closely with Jesus. Truth be told, we all need to choose to be a Jonathan.

Cultivating humility in our daily walk should be a priority. It will be noticed as a rate softness that comes from inner strength and discipleship.

Christian friendships should look and feel different. Choosing to learn from Jonathan just might be a step in becoming more like our Savior.
