It’s like being at the airport with your boarding pass in hand, but not sure if you should get on that plane. It’s been paid for, you’ve got the ticket, but can you take that step? Can you get on that plane?
“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.” (Matthew 28:1-7)
This scripture is incredible as it not only describes what the women experienced as they encountered the angel of God there at the tomb, but what we as believers experience as we come to terms with the truth about Jesus. My commentary in my study Bible says the angel shared four things with the women: 1. Don’t be frightened. 2. He’s not here, he’s alive. 3. Come and see. 4. Go quickly and tell. These four messages from the angel weren’t just meant for these two women.
What will people say? What will my friends think? Will they treat me differently? Will they still love me? What about my family? Will they still want to be around me?
This decision will change everything.
The decision to fully surrender my life to Christ was met with questions, worries and fears. The Lord had saved me from Hell, and because of it, I needed to surrender my will for His. He needed His rightful place on the throne of my life, but could I step down? Could I humble myself to the point of obedience?
Throughout the Bible, the phrase “do not fear” is prominent. I’m guessing God knew exactly what would cripple us and stop us from moving forward. His words ran through my mind as the questions swirled.
How could I not fear? How was that possible? Why shouldn’t I with all that’s at stake?
Because Jesus is alive! He overcame death and the grave! And because of that, His power lives within me because He has redeemed me.
Those two truths are incredibly important in the decision to follow Jesus. Sometimes, people need a little more encouragement. They need to see for themselves what God has done and who Jesus really is. Did He really do all these miraculous things? Could He really save me? Could He really love me that much?
Come and see.
Jesus offers us the opportunity to come and see through His scriptures – eye witness accounts recorded in the Bible. Atheists have set out on a quest to disprove the Bible and its claims only to find themselves realizing they cannot argue with the truth of the Bible and the amount of prophecies Jesus fulfilled. The fact that the disciples were martyred for their faith proves to them that there had to be something true about the events that happened, it had to be worth dying for.
Go and tell. Now that you know, now that you believe, now that you have seen it with your own eyes the work of Jesus, go and tell others about what He has done!
This is what is meant for the life of a follower of Christ. Are you ready?
