Come and Go with Me

Come and go with me.

If we had something important to ask, we knew it was always better to have a friend go with us. Whether it was asking your parents about spending the night, going to an event, or going to a teacher for extra credit or permission to do something, you knew you stood a better chance of a yes if you came in numbers.

I remember on sunny, warm days, we wanted to be outside during class time. We’d formulate a plan and come up with different reasons why it was good for us and then ask. Imagine being the teacher and being approached by one student. Now imagine if the whole class joined together to beg for this request.

Romans 15:30-32 NIV
“I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.
31 Pray that I may be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people there,
32 so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed.
33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.”

As Paul begins to wrap up his letter to the Roman believers, he includes a plea to his brothers and sisters in Christ. He asks for them to join him in his struggles. Not by wielding a sword or banding together an army, but by a different means.

Prayer.

This is how Paul fought his battles. This is how he approached every situation, his fears, and decisions. There were threats against his life in the area he planned to return to. Naturally, he would be nervous or afraid. He asked these believers to join him and become prayer warriors for him.

Imagine what God could do through His church if we were faithful to pray?

I talked with a missionary this week who serves in the urban areas of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The need is great there. The city is full of people from different backgrounds, cultures, and religions. In one city, you could literally reach the nations. They have a huge task in front of them, and they need help.

Missionaries like Laura and Michael Strong rely on our prayers. They know that if they come to us with a need, that we will join with them in their struggles to call out to the Lord and ask for help, wisdom, discernment, and provisions.

Let’s be people of prayer. Reach out to your friends, reach out to a missionary, ask around at work, “How can I pray for you?”

If you need prayer today, if you need someone to come along with you to join you in your struggle and call upon the Lord for help, will you share that? Let us pray with you.

Following Jesus is a choice we make every day. From the moment we wake up, decisions come at us from every angle. Will you choose Christ? Let me show you what it means to become a fully devoted follower of Jesus and how to show others the same. Go to follow.lifeword.org to begin.
