Carried on His Wings

Have you ever watched a momma bird with her young? A pair of eagles nest close to the farm and we’ve watched them raise an eaglet year after year. The nest itself is remarkable, but so is the way they care for their young. They almost never leaving the nest while the egg is there. One parent will hunt for food while the other warms the egg. Once the eaglet hatches, this cycle of food and taking turns in the nest continues. The eagles are protective of their baby, shielding them from rain, wind and harsh temperatures. But there comes a time when the parents realize that the baby needs to learn to fly.

They flutter their feathers over them urging them up and out. And time after time, as the eaglet goes over the side, the eagles watch and swoop in if needed.

This definitely isn’t for the faint of heart. I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack just thinking about it! And as scary as it seems, it’s a necessary process for the child to learn and become independent. Soon, that eaglet will be soaring on his own, but it takes a strong parent to train him in the way he should go.

“As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So the LORD alone did lead him” (Deuteronomy 32:11-12a)

Moses pours these words out through a song as he reminds the Israelites what God has done for them and who He is.

God protected them and nurtured them, but He also had to encourage their growth. While it may have been hard going through the wilderness and relying on Him for food each day, it was all to teach them to turn to Him and not the things of this world.

He does the same for us today. There are times when we feel like that little eaglet, plummeting to the earth below, our death awaiting us. But the Lord, watching us intently, swoops in and provides for us, carrying us on His wings back to safety. And encourages us to do it again and again.

And one day, we too will soar high on wings like eagles!

Do you trust Him? Even in the midst of this harsh time you are dealing with? Do you turn to Him when trouble comes? Or do you look to the things of this world to ease your pain? Trust in the Lord God Almighty. He alone is worthy!
