The follower of Christ has something that others simply do not possess. We have access into the throne room of heaven. This is not just available eternally, but currently. Fixing our minds there is the great curative for all that distresses and depresses here, all that makes us sorrowful.
In fact, we are commanded to set our minds “on things above” where Christ is, “seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1-2). The means for this blessed communion is Word-fed, Spirit-led prayer.
IN THE LORD
That is why the Psalmist, inspired by God to help us, positions these words so carefully.
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones. (Psalm 33:1)
Everyone faces sorrow and sadness. How could you live in this world and be untouched? If we fix our eyes upon the world and its darkness, our flesh and its weakness, our enemy and his relentless evil and seemingly unstoppable advance, we will be drowned by sadness.
But David tells us to look elsewhere. Where can we find joy? Where can we have strength to face overwhelming tasks, to endure uncommon burdens? It is not by fixing our eyes upon the object of our sadness. “Rejoice in the Lord.”
Here is the remedy. Enter into the throne room of heaven in prayer every morning (and throughout the day.) If you have been redeemed by Christ you can come and have “peace facing God, having obtained an introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand” (Romans 5:1-2).
We can enter into His real presence and gaze upon Him at any time. We must train our eyes to look steadily upon Him and meditate there. To hallow His name. We will remember His sufficiency and unlimited power. We will be lifted by His strong right hand and realize that underneath us are the everlasting arms. We will be comforted that the Lord is on His throne which is established with justice and righteousness and that kings are under His control; that He “frustrates the counsel of the nations” and “the counsel of the Lord stands forever” (Psalm 33:10-11).
If we look to the world for joy, we will find insurmountable barriers. Even the best it offers disappoints. If we look to ourselves, thinking our proud work is enough, our sins will become glaringly visible and disappointing. Even relying on others for our joy can be fickle and weak. Nothing can inherently lift our sorrow and give us joy … except One.
Wait for the Lord. He is our help and shield. For our hearts rejoice in Him because we trust in His holy name. (Psalm 33:20-21)
