An Ark of Safety for Today

Noah walked with God. Genesis 6:9

Growing up, I lived in tornado alley. Tornado alley is a term used to describe a central part of the United States where the most tornadoes occur. When different air temperatures converge, it creates an unstable environment perfect for creating tornadoes. Once when I was a little girl, mom was baking a chocolate cake one afternoon, when the sky grew ominous and the sirens began blaring. We all gathered in the hallway in the middle of our house, hovered together. The smell of cake filled the house as the storm raged over us. My sister cried, but I just sat there with wide eyes and heart pounding, while we waited for the sirens to stop. And they did. Eventually, the storm moved on, and we were safe again until the next time.

Man’s corruption has been colliding with God’s holiness since the first pages of our story. One forbidden bite unleashed the floodwaters of sin, unstoppable apart from God’s intervention.

God looked upon His creation and it was filled with only evil all the time. In all that mess, things looked hopeless, and it would have been except for the convergence of God’s mercy and the faithfulness of one person. His name was Noah, and he was blameless and walked with God. I imagine this was a lonely road for Noah, since everything and everyone around him was filled with corruption. God, the God of Abundance, often uses a single thread to accomplish His great plans. In Genesis 6, Noah is the blameless thread who walked with God, and God used him to make an ark of safety.

The Creator, who was about to destroy His creation, used Noah’s hands to make something that would provide safe passage through the impending storm’s destruction. In Genesis 6:14-16, God uses the word “make” five times as he instructs Noah on what to do. The word “make” means to bring forth, fulfill, gather, get, go about, be occupied with, and govern.

In these last days before the Lord returns, corruption still colors everything under the sun. When God looks upon the violence of men’s hearts, He is grieved. In the KJV version, the word used for the sorrow God felt is “repenteth,” taken from the Hebrew word “nacham,” which means to sigh, to breath strongly, and to be sorry.

God is bringing another utter destruction of all He has made, and only those who are in Christ will have an ark covering them, leading them to safety. Climbing into the ark of God takes a simple thread of faith. Admit to Him that you are a sinner, acknowledge your sins, and commit your life to Christ. Climbing into the ark of God’s safety is always only a prayer away. We need the ark of safety only found in Jesus to ensure safe passage through the floodwaters of these last days on earth before He returns. We are one day closer to being with Him forever. As it was in the days of Noah, God is still looking for the faithfulness of one person to carry out His plans. Your simple thread of obedience could be what God uses to weave together a lifeboat for you and those you love. It is never too late to crawl into the ark of God’s safety. As men multiply on the earth, sin will continue to multiply. We are assured safe passage as we rest in His Provision that is always only a breath prayer away.

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household... Hebrews 11:7
