Have you been there? A time in your life when you felt completely and utterly alone. You may have been surrounded by people, but there was not one person who could give you the help or comfort you needed. Maybe you felt that everyone had turned against you and you didn’t have one friend to turn to. Even those that seemed closest to you still weren’t enough to change that deep hurt and lonely feeling.
Jesus was there, too.
“Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.” (Matthew 26:31-35)
Jesus, the Son of God, the very Savior of the world, the One who existed before time began, was alone. In this passage, the word “offended” means to fall away. And the word “smite” means to strike. Jesus predicted exactly what would happen. His closest friends would turn away from Him. As pressure increased, their commitment decreased.
We want to say that we would never do that. We would never deny Jesus, but would we?
Even Peter, the headstrong bull that he was, denied Him three times before the rooster crowed.
When it gets tough, despair sinks in, and we begin to feel alone, one thing we can remember is that we are never truly alone. There is One that will always be there to shine light into our darkness.
Jesus.
The very One who knew exactly what it was like to feel what you are feeling.
Reach out to Him.
And as you do, I promise you, you will begin to see there are more that care about you than you realize.
There is hope in Jesus. He is a friend that sticks closer than anyone I’ve ever known. Will you reach out to Him today?
“O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” (Psalm 139:1-14)
