Rahab, a woman living in Jericho, has just hidden two foreign men on her rooftop. She is questioned by the authorities, but diverts them to look somewhere else. As the guards hurriedly leave, she rushes to the two men hidden on her roof.
“And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.” (Joshua 2:9-11)
How did Rahab know about God? How did she know of the great and awesome things He had done for His people?
She heard the stories.
News traveled fast to their ears. Everyone was talking about the God of the Israelites! They were terrified of what would happen to them! In verse 11, it describes their fear as their “hearts did melt”. It wasn’t just enough to hear the story, but Rahab believed it to be true. She declares to the men that she believes their God is who He says He is “for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.”
Rahab’s life would be spared because she heard the stories of God and His power and believed. Her faith saved her.
Do not doubt the power of your words. The stories you tell will be passed from one to the next. Imagine the impact that story could have when it’s the story of Jesus! The gospel is powerful and meant to be shared. It’s a story that needs to be told. It’s the story of God’s love for us as He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. It’s a story of love, forgiveness, and redemption. People will know of the greatest of God because they heard about Him.
Lifeword is now broadcasting the gospel of Jesus Christ in over 120 languages. Can you believe that? I’m amazed at the number of people that are able to hear Lifeword’s broadcast throughout the world. Remote villages in the Philippines, desert plains in Africa, the mountains of Peru, and the list goes on and on. Through radio towers in these countries, Lifeword is able to broadcast to the ears of millions of people, some of which have no Bible and they listen just to be able to write down the scripture as they hear the broadcast.
Just like Rahab, their lives will be spared because they hear the stories of God and His power and believe in Him as their Lord. Their faith will save them!
The gospel is a story worth sharing.
We tell the story.
