A man was getting a haircut in a local barber shop and overheard the barber and some other men talking.
He was shocked!
“Where did you hear that?” the man asked.
From Stan down at the grocery store. He said he heard it from Betty over at the pharmacy.
What these men were saying was untrue. But this news was spreading like wildfire, and he needed to get to the bottom of it.
He made his way to see Betty at the pharmacy but didn’t even make it in the door. Today’s papers were on the newsstand. The front page headline told him all he needed to know.
The newspaper had it all wrong.
And he was going straight to the source. They needed to know the truth, and they needed to share it with the community.
Acts 19:21-22
“After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
22 He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer.”
Why would Paul say he needed to go to Rome?
Everywhere he looked, he saw a great need for truth. These people were worshipping false idols, practicing sorcery, and being a part of the occult. Paul wanted to share the truth with these people. And he did. But he knew he needed to get to the source.
Rome.
Rome’s influence was everywhere. And that’s where Paul wanted to be. If he could go to the source of the issue, he could make a difference. People there could learn the truth, which could influence the world. He wanted to take the message of Jesus Christ to Rome.
Some days it feels like you’re constantly putting out little fires, doesn’t it? But where are they sparking from? We have to go to the source.
Much of it has to do with a need for the truth. If people truly understood the depth and severity of their sin and the holiness of God, they would turn to Him and beg for forgiveness. If they only knew that He loved them and wanted to heal and redeem them. If only they could hear that someone cared about them and that their lives have a purpose. If only they could hear the name of Jesus in their language.
The most important thing you can do today is share Jesus with someone. This world is full of hopelessness, anxiety, depression, and hatred, and the only answer that can bring true healing and hope is Jesus.
This is what we do at Lifeword. We tell the story of Jesus. We know the source of the problem in all of our hearts – sin – and we want to share the only solution – Jesus.
