A Declaration

In 1776, 13 colonies joined together to declare their independence from Britain with three goals in mind: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

This was no easy task and it took a great deal of work and courage to create this declaration since if they lost the war all the signees could have faced execution. To this day, the Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in US history.

The Holy Bible holds incredible declarations, but one in particular stands out to me this morning in Genesis.

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.” (Genesis 17:1)

God declares exactly who He is. He says He is the Almighty God. The original word here is Shaddai, meaning all-powerful. From this word we see three important characteristics about who God is.

  1. Omnipotent. This means God is strong and powerful and in control. He has all authority and dominion and one day everything will bow down in submission to Him as the King of Kings.
  2. Omnipresent. This means God can be everywhere at the same time. I know that seems mind blowing, but let’s face it, He is God (Jeremiah 23:24).
  3. Omniscient. This means all-knowing and all-seeing. At Christmas time we sing one song in particular who says Santa, “Knows when you are sleeping, knows when you’re awake [and] he knows if you’ve been bad or good so be good for goodness sake.” If we can believe Santa can do those things as a child, why is it so hard for us to believe that God, the creator of the universe, can do this? (Psalm 139:1-3)

These three divine attributes of God are overwhelming in thought but they describe who He is.

God is so much more than we can ever imagine. As we study His Scripture and pray this morning, let us be in awe and worship Him for who He is.
