A God of Perfect Justice

God is perfect. As such, He is perfect in every dimension. Perfect in love, grace, and truth. Perfect in kindness, goodness, and mercy. If He is not perfect in the slightest dimension, He is not perfect at all and therefore not God.

So, we must go farther to know Him fully. For He is also perfect in ways that require actions that, at first glance, seem a contradiction to His perfect character. The most recognizable of those is His *justice*.

We hate injustice, particularly if we are the recipient. “That’s not fair,” we cry when we are hurt, when innocent people are betrayed, wounded, or persecuted. The worst things about our world are the injustices that come about as a result of man’s sin.

We will one day live, if we have believed in Christ, in a world that is perfectly righteous and just. It will be ruled by the King whose throne is established on righteousness and justice. But some removal of injustice must occur before that new world comes.

IT WILL BE PERSONAL AND IMPARTIAL

Paul reminds us—in no uncertain terms—that the justice of God is coming against all those who have ignored, disobeyed, and opposed Him in this life, and particularly those who have persecuted His children.

As Paul commends the believers in Thessalonica for their “perseverance and faith in all [their] persecutions and afflictions that [they] are enduring,” he comforts them with the reality of the justice that is coming:

*“It is clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment that you will be counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also are suffering, since it is just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you and to give relief to you who are afflicted, along with us. This will take place at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels, when he takes vengeance with flaming fire on those who don’t know God and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious strength on that day when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at by all those who have believed, because our testimony among you was believed.”*
**2 Thessalonians 1:5–10**

Notice the details of God’s coming judgment.

1. It is righteous judgment, and “it is just” for God to repay those who have persecuted others.

2. God’s judgment on some will relieve the afflictions that are resting on the true followers of Christ.

3. This will happen when Christ returns and establishes His new kingdom.

4. He will be revealed to all, coming with His “powerful angels.”

5. He will utilize “flaming fire” in His judgments on the unjust.

6. He will exert His “vengeance.” This reminds us why Paul tells us we don’t have to take revenge on those who hurt and mistreat us now, for “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” We should “leave room for God’s wrath” (Romans 12:19).

7. His judgment will come upon all who “do not know God” and “do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.” This means every unbeliever will face God’s judgment. There will be no exceptions.

8. They will pay the penalty of “eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence.” What greater judgment could there be than to be eternally and irrevocably separated from the presence of God? To live separated from His presence eternally will be the greatest judgment possible. But remember, it is a judgment that those who ignore and disobey Christ have chosen.

9. They will never again experience the benefits of God’s “glorious strength”—His mercy, blessings, and help that have come to all who live in this world currently. Remember this: every goodness you know or see in this world is because of God’s goodness.

God is perfect in justice. All who cry out for justice will one day see it, whether they agree with what that justice is like or not.

The world will be restored to Eden in the future, and all evil and injustice will forever be banished from the new heavens and new earth, never to defile God’s creation again.

God’s born-again family will forever marvel at and glorify Him for His perfect justice.
