A New Covering

Look at this thing.

I’ve had this Bible for a long time. My husband gave it to me for Christmas one year.

Now, the outside is worn. After years of being used and tossed around from place to place, it looks like it’s falling apart.

But the pages on the inside, well, they’re still good. They’re full of life!

I’ve thought about having it recovered. They could just take off this outside cover, take these pages, and put them into a new one. One that’s not worn out and falling apart. The inside would still be the same Bible I’ve always had, just with a new covering.

This Bible isn’t the only thing that feels like it’s breaking down. After years of use, this body feels it too. Does yours?

I hear it every day. “We’re not as young as we once were.” And, “My body is breaking down.”

Whether it’s the pain in our joints telling us rain is coming, the creaks and pops as we try to climb the stairs, or even the groans we let out when we have to get out of the chair, these bodies weren’t meant to last forever.

When the end of life comes and this heart stops beating, this old, worn-out body will be buried. But what’s inside, the life within us, won’t remain in that grave.

So, where does it go?

Well, that depends on the decision you make in this life.

See, the reason these bodies are breaking down is because of sin. We were created by Almighty God, but because of sin, we have been separated from Him. Because God is holy and righteous, He will judge sin. His wrath will be poured out on all those who reject Him.

But He is also merciful, and He made a way for us to be saved from that wrath.

He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us. Christ gave His life on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. Jesus offers us forgiveness, salvation, and an eternal home in His presence. If we accept His invitation of forgiveness and salvation through faith in Him, we will spend eternity with the Lord.

For those who belong to Christ, when we die, our souls go to be with the Lord while our bodies remain in the ground.

Look at 2 Corinthians 5:8:

“We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.”

Paul also explained it to the Thessalonian believers.

1 Thessalonians 4:13–16:

“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope
